Melissa is training for the Avon Breast Cancer Walk in New York City.

This year I am walking New York City the first weekend in October. This walk coincides with my 35 birthday. Thirty-five is a real health marker for black women. Our likelihood of getting sick and dying from a variety of diseases increases at this milestone. So I am going to spend my 35th birthday walking for my health and the health of my community. Breast cancer still affects far too many black women and our families. I'm determined to do everything I can to help put an end to it. The money I raise will be managed and disbursed by the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade to help provide access to care for those that most need it, fund educational programs, and accelerate research into new treatments and potential cures. I can't do it without your help. Though I'm required to raise at least $1,800 in donations, I plan to raise much more!

Melissa is studying at Union Theological Seminary in New York City.

The mission of Union Theological Seminary, an independent, multi-denominational seminary in the City of New York, derives from a Christian heritage that is at once progressive and evangelistic: to educate leaders for ministry in churches and related organizations, to extend the work of social justice and to enrich the academy through teaching and research.

Education at Union Theological Seminary is deeply rooted in a critical understanding of the breadth of Christian traditions yet significantly instructed by the insights of other faiths. It makes connections between these traditions and the most profoundly challenging issues of our contemporary experience: the realities of suffering and injustice, world religious pluralism, the fragility of our planet, and discoveries of modern science. Union envisions a future in which teaching and learning continues to be ecumenical in spirit, supporting a record of academic excellence and a deep commitment to social justice. Union envisions its graduates changing the world by practicing their vocations with dedication to the mission of the churches and leadership in the academy and society, ever seeking to bring a religiously grounded, critical and compassionate presence to the major personal, social, political and scientific realities of our time.

Melissa Lacewell-Harris is a political scientist. That makes her especially particular about the neighborhood in which she lives. Accepting a job as an associate professor of politics and African American studies at Princeton University last year, she knew she wanted to become a part of the community. The setting, though, had to retain many of the characteristics of the neighborhood she had left behind in Chicago, where she taught political science at the University of Chicago for seven years.

"I wanted to live in town. I wanted to preserve my walking lifestyle," Harris-Lacewell says. "Being a political scientist, I am really invested in the idea of local communities."
